Matt, a first year wrestler, pinned his way through the tournament besting two first graders and a kindergartner on his way to a first place finish in the tournament. "Matt's intensity seemed to fuel the other kids throughout the day", commented Coach Williams. In the 56 pound weight class, Team Kratos had two strong performances. Christian Owsley (4th grade) took first place and Nick Farrell (3rd grade) brought home a 3rd place medal. Christian, a second year wrestler, has been a hard worker all season long and the hard work paid off. Christian pinned all of his opponents during the tournament. Nick Farrell, also a second year, started his day with tough double overtime loss to a seasoned wrestler from Wadsworth. "In the double overtime period, the opponent was able to escape from the botttom position during the waning seconds of the last period to put Nick at a deficit. Nick came back from the stinging decision and won his next three matches to end the day with a 4-1 record. In the 64 pound weight class, Nathan Szoch (2nd grade) took a second place in the tournament.. Nathan won his first two matches by decisions to include a 5-1 point decision over an opponent Uniontown Lake who prior to wrestling Nathan had maintained an undefeated record during this years season of 5-0. Nathan lost a close championship round match by a score of 1-2 against an opponent from Green. At the 67 pound weight class, Alex Hartner (6th grade) brought a surprise performance by winning his two first matches before losing in the championship round to a competitor from Barberton. Alex, a first year wrestler, entered the tournament with a
0.500 record but obviously peaked just at the right time. Also at the 67 pound weight class, but wrestling in a different bracket, Chris Motter (3rd grade), had a standout performance during the day. Chris lost his first match on points to a very talented and seasoned wrestler from North Akron Wrestling Club. Chris then came through the consolation bracket to take third place. "Chris has really taken to this sport, " commented coach Williams, " given he was a rookie, I look forward to what the future has in store for this young wrestler." At 70 pound weight class, Michael Szoch (4th grade), won all three of his matches by pin to include a first period pin in the championship match to earn a 1st place finish. Following Michael was Tyler Lewis (5th grade) at 79 pound weight class. Tyler captured a first place finish as well by winning three matches all decided by points. Along his journey to the championship round, Tyler beat two standout wrestlers, a previously undefeated wrestler from Wadsworth and a wrestler from Portage Lakes whose record was 5-3. In a different 79 pound bracket, Hudson's Bogart Baker (5th grade) captured a second place title for the day. Advancing on a bye in the first round, Bogart pinned his second match to advance to the finals where he was then defeated by a Garfield opponent when he got caught in a headlock . In the 90 pound weight class, Team Kratos had two wrestlers bring home medals. Mike Delsanter (4th grade) advanced to the the finals where he loss in a 9-4 decision to an opponent from Garfield, ending the day with a 2nd place finish. Zach Talley (6th grade) loss his first match but came back to win back to back matches to earn a third place. Zach's consolation finals bout lit up the attending Hudson crowd when he was able to score a takedown during the sudden death overtime period to bring home the victory. At the 120 pound weigh class, Hudson's Jas Spearman (6th grade), pinned his way to the finals where he met an equally talented opponent from Wadsworth. In a close contended bout that went to overtime, his opponent was able to capture a quick takedown in the sudden death overtime period. Revenging Jas's overtime loss, Hudson's Alex Gartner (6th grade), was able to score a takedown during sudden death overtime to earn a 3rd place victory in the consolation finals match at the 155 pound weight. What made this win especially rewarding was that Alex's consolation finals match paired him against a competitior who had previously pinned Alex during regular season competition. Wrapping up the last weight class, Hudson's Pete Mougey (6th grade), earned a 1st place finish by defeating his first opponent and then earning a second victory due to dequalification of his opponent.
"I'm proud of the grit, determination and improvement these kids showed throughout the season and look forward to how we will continue to build this feeder program into a dominant youth wrestling club." commented Coach Williams at the end of the tournament, "so stay tuned."
